Ningning, born as Ning Yizhuo, grew up in Harbin, China. She attended Harbin Normal University Middle School and graduated from Beijing Contemporary Music Academy. She was scouted by SM Entertainment after appearing on the Chinese singing TV show Let’s Sing Kids. At first, she thought that she was being scammed as the person who contacted her approached her directly on her social media saying – “I’m working for SM; your singing was impressive; I’d like to see you in Korea. Are you interested in becoming an idol?”.

Can’t blame her. It really looked like a typical scam message. She didn’t reply to it at first. After a little while, however, she decided to do so as there was nothing wrong with responding once. It’s like opportunity comes for those who vie for. When she found that it was legit, she left for South Korea that day itself.

On September 19, 2016, Ningning was introduced as a member of SM Rookies, a pre-debut training team. During her time with SM Rookies, she participated in various activities including the Rookies Princess: Who’s the Best?, segment of My SMT and recorded covers for the Korean animated TV program Shining Star in 2017.
